Hi All,


I am having a weird problem, when ever i am sending a normal text message to people from a group(suppose 'Friends'), then the text message is automatically getting converted to multimedia message.

Steps to reproduce the problem:::
1. go to messages from the desktop.
2. Click on compose new message.
3. Click on Group button
4. select multiple contacts from a particular group.
5. click on add
(here you will see that a popup is displayed that says, "Converting to multimedia message."

I have checked that the message is indeed a MMS that is sent to the recipients.
what I want is a normal text message to be sent and not a MMS
How do i stop this behavior.

Recently I have upgraded to Froyo .

Details: Firmware version : 2.2

It happened with me too... I sent 30 such MMSs by mistake (they were supposed to be SMSs) over that I was charged Rs. 2(INR) per MMS...
after a little R&D from my end I found that there is a setting that probably restricts sending MMS
1. Go to Messaging
2. Click on Menu
3. Then Settings
4. Scroll Down to Multimedia Message (MMS) settings
5. There is option called Creation Mode, select that...
6. It shows 3 options Restricted, Warning and Free
7. Select Restricted to Completely Stop MMSs

8. (Do at your own risk) I also Deleted the MMS-APN provided by my carrier Vodafone, you can find that in your Home -> Menu -> Settings -> Wireless and Network -> Mobile Networks -> Access Point Names
There would be 2 APNs, delete the one which states MMS (In my case it was portalmms)

I have also Noticed this MMS option is enabled automatically when the SMS is pretty long (crosses certain word limit)...

Text messages are supposed to be less than 160 characters so it sounds like your provider has done you a "favour" of automatically converting to MMS. That way the user doesn't have to trim messages or deal with rejection notices.

Here in INDIA the providers never do favours. (I think so that might be the case everywhere else too )
They Charged me around 1.25$(USD) for 30 MMSs whereas I can send around 500 SMSs for 1$(USD). One can end end up with Very Huge Mobile Bill because of this situation...
Previously before SGS I have used SonyEricsson, Motorola, LG, Nokia, etc. the general practice here is if your SMS is more than 160 the provider sends that SMS as 1 single SMS but bills you according to the number of character sent... that was never a problem with me.... (i.e. for 300 character SMS I get billed for 2 SMSs and so on....)
So it has to be SGS which tries to do an unwanted favour... (in my case)
Now with MMS restricted and dedicated MMS APN deleted... I can save unnecessary, unwanted and extra charges from my provider

Don't think this is a network issue, but a feature on the phone (tho i wish it was one you could turn off).

Text messages can only be 160 characters, mms (multimedia message) can hold 6 times as much as well as attachments. So when the message gets over a certain length it changes it to mms, in theory its meant to save you money. However, in my case (and im sure many others) as I get unlimited texts and get charged for mms, doesnt really work to my advantage.

Doesn't appear to be a means of turning off this feature, but I have read before there are messaging apps on the market that will keep the message format as text. Sorry I don't know which apps in particular to suggest, never tried them myself.

Finally Got the Message Limit figured out...
If your message crosses the limit of 3x160=480 characters then the phone converts the entire message into a MMS and sends it as MMS.
If you stay within the limit of less than 480 characters, the phone send that Message of urs as SMS

for Eg. if your message has 400 characters then then you get billed for 3 SMS
But if you message is 480+ Characters then you get billed for sending 1 MMS
